Silver Sheen – 2017 to 2019 rise and fall

This is the story of a lost tree.

I found this in May 2019 at Plumpton Nursery for $10. Or maybe Rockbank. It was a substantial tree with a lovely twist in the base.

Doesn’t look great from up here.
That crooked trunk, though…

I messed around trying to air layer the top, like everything I did that year. It didn’t work, so lets just skip over it.

By January 2018 I was looking to promote some growth, so I trimmed the tops:

The Silver Sheen back buds like crazy. By March there were lots of new branches and leaves growing. So into the pot it went (inorganic soil mix v1).

That’s a big root ball.
That’s sphagnum moss on top. Not sure what I was thinking.

July 2018:

Push in, push in!

So by January 2019 it’s ready for serious trimming:

before
After. But not enough.

By May 2019 it was beginning to settle it to a shape. It was the most visually striking of my bonsai, with a 4 foot body coming out of a much smaller pot.

And everything was fine forever…

In July 2019 we came back from an overnight to find strong winds had smashed the pot, and the main trunk line.

Off the table and into other pots (which both did fine).
Picking up the pieces.

I put it into a new pot:

But it never took, and just died from there. September 2019:
