Inspired by the success of the pepper tree seeds, and the general summer environment, I harvested some more seeds from local trees to see if they will plant. This particular lot is from a Narrow Leaf Ash.
It turns out this one is tricky to get to germinate. Searching for a guide, I found this page, which gives these steps:
- Let the keys (seed pods) ripen on the tree until they are brown
- Debunch into separate seeds
- Soak for 2 days in cold water
- Put in a pretreatment pot (layer of stone, layer of sand, layer of compost/sand/seeds, layer of sand)
- Keep it for a for a summer and a winter, watering if it dries out
- Plant the following spring
So I made a couple of mistakes even getting this far. I harvested a mix of green and brown seeds, and I did it in mid-summer. But I’m still optimistic.
