Unryu Mulberry: May 2024 Acquisition

I’ve been trying to avoid buying new trees, because I’ve a substantial backlog already. But sometimes, things get through to the keeper. And I now have a new tree: Unryu Mulberry, a.k.a. Contorted Mulberry, or even Morus alba ‘Unryu’, if I’ve got that part right.

Yep, that’s what it says, as best I can tell.

It didn’t come with any documents, so I’ve cobbled together this:

Let’s see… Zone 5 is northern USA, while Australia is zone 9. And April to June means spring to early summer.
The tree as a whole. Yes, it’s Bunnings, but unusually it doesn’t seem to be a graft, and has a bit of character. Which may be why it’s on clearance.

The clearance also had a bunch of maples, including Coral Maple, Silver Maple, and Snake Bark Maple. but they were all very straight, frequently tall, and not that interesting. But if you want a three-meter Silver Maple, hurry.

Packaged into the car to get home without breaking too many branches.
The full tree. Most of it is going to go, unfortunately including the convoluted bits. I’m hoping they’ll grow back.

In the yard the next day.
All tucked away for the winter.

The branches of the tree are very flexible… will it take wiring? Also, I’m worried that those leaves are going to be on the large side. Which is what I get for buying a winter tree.
