Blue Alps Juniper: August 2024 repotting

In June this tree got blown off the bench and cracked. I made some repairs at the time to keep it going, but that was always a patch job. Plus, I wanted to put it into a perlite mix. Time to get it done.

The starting point. I’m not planning to do any styling today, just move it into a new pot.
The repairs have held, and honestly this could probably last years.
Out of the pot, and honestly junipers seem to do fine in the old mix. This is not lacking for roots.
Roots grown to fit the pot.
Sizing out the new pot, which is somewhat larger.
I did at least think about which is the front… can I show off a little wiggle.
Filling up.

I had some ground cover from the Blue Jacaranda repotting, which I apparently have not yet blogged. But it was free, so there it goes.
The pot did not survive the removal of the tree.

But, as it happens, the story didn’t end there. It gets very windy here in spring. The next day I found the tree blown to the side. Partly it’s the tree, and partly it’s the soil mix – perlite is light. So move work is needed.

The secret ingredient is ballast.
Over the ballast and wiring in place.
Plus, when the tree tipped, the ground cover just flopped off. I think we can prevent that from happening again.

It’s still a little loose, so I’ve put it with the most shelter from the wind that I can manage. Let’s see how it goes.
