Blue Jacaranda: August 2024 creation

The Blue Jacaranda didn’t have a great year last year… the shape is ok, but it seemed to struggle. I think the problem is the pot (too big) and the soil (too thick, too damp (from the self-watering pot)). Plus, it’s had plenty of growing time. Time to see what it’s got.

Starting point. It looked a bit ok when the leaves were out last year.
I’m pretty sure this is still alive, but it’s well into spring now, and there’s not much showing.
Out of the pot, and there’s a lot of roots from the ground cover. None to see from the Jacaranda though, which was the point of the exercise.
This is a thick soil that is not draining.
Flat earth meets Yggdrasil.
And clear.
Looking for a pot.
I cleaned up the roots a little…
…but not as much as I could have.

Looking now, those roots are pretty problematic. There’s a significant portion of the tree between the bottom root and the soil line. Plus there’s some inverse taper that would stop me from dropping the soil line. It’s probably good to let it clearly recover before going too hard at the roots, but I can’t recall whether that was a conscious decision at the time.

Into the pot, and let’s put some of the ground cover back.

And done.

The hope is that the perlite mix plus fertilizer will create a better environment for the tree. The docs said it would be “happy in rich, well grained soil in a warm sunny site.” The old soil certainly wasn’t that. Let’s see.
