Japanese Maple Solo: September 2024 repotting

As far as I can see, this hasn’t been repotted since the original potting in 2019. And growth was definitely down last year. Time for a refresh.

I’m a couple of weeks late for the repot. But I’m sure it will be fine.
With the back view, the two branches coming from the one low joint is not great.
I didn’t do a great job with covering the wire.
Yup, that’s root bound. Also, fly screen covering the base, which creates this sort of root mat.
And so begins the raking…
…and the poking….
…and the detangling.
The flyscreen does get good ramification, but you don’t get to keep it. Which may be a net good. hmm.
I’m quite happy with the volume of roots, even after cutting a lot of.
The roots show the shape. I did some more work to clear these out.
And back into the pot.

And done.

With the perlite soil mix and new fertilizer I’m expecting a strong growing season. Assuming that happens, I might do some structural pruning over summer:

  • the two lowest branches are straight and dull
  • the top joint needs to come off to reduce the height
  • the top third should be tighter
