Liquidambar: September 2024 maintenance

In May I did some fairly heavy wiring to stop this growing up up up. It’s now spring, and the branches will start thickening, so it all has to come off before it scars.

I think this is one of the better bits of wiring I’ve done. It’s consistently tight and neat. I don’t think the tree agrees much.
Spring growth.
The downward curves did not take at all.

Some pruning on the longer branches.
By ancient tradition.

The tree is a little week in current state:

  • Straight trunk with no movement and a little taper.
  • one weak branch
  • a three-way fork
  • a lot of horizontal branching which wants to grow up.

Would some strong structure changes help? Let’s look at an earlier shot and imagine:

Idea for changes:
1. prune the taller left trunk.
2. encourage the thinner central branch
3. train a new more vertical leader on the right branch
