Stump Prickly Paperbark: April 2025 training

This is growing vigorously enough that I’ll put it in a real bonsai pot come spring. It’s certainly recovered from the uprooting. I’ll have to keep an eye out for a suitable pot, considering the root ball was tall and thin, and unlikely to ever spread out. I’ve moved it somewhere more out of the way and with more sunlight, so lots of growth to come.

There’s enough spread on the tree that it’s getting in the way of walking past.

Snip. My main focus is on getting outward growing branches, and reducing multiple branches from a single point.

This is one possible front. I could have a cradle from the three major branches.
This feels more balanced as a front, but the cut mark is a problem.

I think this might be the best front, to show off the taper, and reduce the prominence of the branches.

The tree grows densely, so I expect to get some solid foliage. I see a lot of these around the streets, and I think the biggest trick will be to get some clear pads. That’s probably going to be a result of topiary more than anything.
