Coprosma Royale: May 2024 pruning

Did you know hedge shrubs get hedgey and shrubby if you leave them alone. Who knew?

I’ve pruned this back hard a couple of times, and the result is uncontrolled shrub.
Looking closer, the trunk is almost hidden. That needs fixing.
There were a bunch of blackened leaves. I didn’t see any fungus.
Some searching suggests this is either overwatering or overfertilizing. Given I haven’t really fertilized, I’m guessing it’s the water.
Coprosma Royale: May 2024 pruning
Pruned and wired, with a couple of decisions deferred.
The central left trunk has a branch that is growing directly to the front.
Move slightly to the side, and the branch merges with the trunk behind it, giving the appearance of inverse taper. It will have to be pruned.
Top view will now let sunlight in.
By ancient tradition: the cuttings.
