Liquidambar: May 2024 wiring

I’m expecting to bonsai the liquidambar in spring… it’s a good size, and it’s hard to judge the shape while it’s in the pot. It’s winter now, and the branches are bare, so I’ve a clear view of the tree. And there’s some very obvious undesirable growth.

The tree looks like it’s been coppiced.

I’m thinking this is a problem that can be fixed with wiring.

This was a long branch growing straight up, and a little back. I cut off most of it, and was thinking about chopping the whole top portion. But I decided to try the wiring.
Ignoring the bottom branch (too long), I’m hoping the top branch will extend and grow.
The lower branch is fine. But I keep coming back to the branch in the middle of the fork.

After quite a lot of wiring…

I think this is very promising. there’s a long through-line trunk to the top, a thick pad on the right, and some counterweight on the left. I think it’s too wide, but I’ll consider that in summer.
This middle trunk is just getting in the way.
An experiment to see what it looks like from the back. The middle branch is not blocking the view anymore…
…but it’s not adding much either. (Also, the lowest branch clearly needs more movement.)
Back to the winter spot, with strawberry growing for company.
My plan is to take the wire off in spring; hopefully this will set the branches while avoiding wiring scars.
