Lilly Pilly: November 2024 maintenance

So much better since the repot a year ago – only one year ago! And then a caterpillar attack, which seems to have been warded off by sprays. Now time for maintenance.

I won’t say it’s unrecognizable, because that straight trunk is very recognizable. But I like that the top is thick enough to hide the horrible cuts there.
No sign of caterpillars. Better bonsai through chemistry.
The whole tree is full of new growth going off in all directions, which is why it’s time for pruning.
Some of the old branches have too much upwards, and not enough taper, which is something else I was working on fixing.

Snip.

Lilly Pilly: November 2024 maintenance
The basic project here is clip-and-grow to build taper and movement into the branches. Probably haven’t done enough yet.

The basic shape is probably going to be somewhere between conical and diamond. (Web search for the natural Lilly Pilly tree shape is mildly amusing, because it’s such a common garden plant that the results are dominated by hedges.)
