I’ve had these for 4 months, and won’t get to potting them this year, so let’s prune instead. I’ll make some progress in building the shape without getting blocked by pots and such-like.

This is why it needs a prune: that’s a hedge, not a tree.
Lessons from looking it over before starting:
Lesson one: there’s a lot of deadwood hanging around. I expect this will decide to let branches die very readily.
Lesson 2: The flowers look like they’ll hang around forever. Cleaning will be needed.
Lesson 3: this has definitely had a hedge trimmer run over it in the past. So I can really cut to shape.
Finishing point (for today at least):
I’m expecting this to be the front.
