Coprosma Royale: September 2022 pruning

It’s been 4 months since I picked this up. I was thinking about potting it, but that’s not going to happen. Plus it needs some reshaping to be more tree and less hedge. So let’s do that for Spring.

Starting point:

Getting careless with the angle there, Michael.

As a hedge tree, this will bud everywhere, with a strong tendency to grow up.

Ring of buds.
Everywhere goes up.
Still has nice bark.

The pruning goals were:

  • bring down the height of the tree
  • reduce branching to two per node
  • open up the insides to promote inner budding
  • show the profile of the tree
Good enough.
Quite a pile of offcuts.
