Water Gum: May 2024 maintenance

A second good growing season, once it went back into the water tray, which is a limitation I’ll try to resolve in spring.

This thing is tall; my second tallest bonsai, and the most substantial.
Here’s the view from the other side, which shows more of the trunk.
Nebari view.
I’d previously cut this off, and left a couple of centimeters as a stub. I’ve cut it back to the joint.
View from above showing a thick thick canopy.
I’ve used raffia to tie down one branch, rather than wire. I’m hoping to avoid scarring this way.
The end result. Still too square a top.

I feel like the upper level needs a fairly solid prune, and I don’t have the bottle to do it. But when I have the tree in front of me, I can’t see such a cut. Maybe I’m just enjoying having A Big Bonsaiā„¢. Or maybe the leaves are just too big. Maybe If I gave it a thorough defoliation, I’d be able to see better?
