Who’s up for a primary school science experiment? Did you know avocados root really easily? Well, either I’d forgotten or never knew. So in 2019 I returned to school.
Sprouting starts in about 4 weeks, And they grew to about a foot high in 6 months.
Some things to know about growing avocados:
- Avocados do not grow true to seed – you don’t get the same fruit from the seed as the original fruit.
- The market has already selected for the ‘best’ avocado in multiple dimensions (e.g. taste, longevity, appearance), so what you grow from a seedling is probably going to be much worse.
- If you want to grow edible avocado, you need to buy cuttings of farm plants
- If you want to grow avocados, you need to make sure you have both male and female trees.
- Also, these are now 3 years old, and aren’t inclined to give fruit. That’s probably because I’ve been pruning aggressively.
