The Avocados – 2019 seedlings

Who’s up for a primary school science experiment? Did you know avocados root really easily? Well, either I’d forgotten or never knew. So in 2019 I returned to school.

This is actually two separate attempts, one about 3 months ahead of the other.

Sprouting starts in about 4 weeks, And they grew to about a foot high in 6 months.

Some things to know about growing avocados:

  1. Avocados do not grow true to seed – you don’t get the same fruit from the seed as the original fruit.
  2. The market has already selected for the ‘best’ avocado in multiple dimensions (e.g. taste, longevity, appearance), so what you grow from a seedling is probably going to be much worse.
  3. If you want to grow edible avocado, you need to buy cuttings of farm plants
  4. If you want to grow avocados, you need to make sure you have both male and female trees.
  5. Also, these are now 3 years old, and aren’t inclined to give fruit. That’s probably because I’ve been pruning aggressively.
