Water Gum: September 2022 potting

Another one that’s been a long time coming. Recaps:

  • I got it in 2019 from a nursery giving away free to shift unwanted stock
  • Air layer started in November 2020
  • kept the air layer going after no progress by Jan 2022

I’ve had enough of waiting… time to move.

That’s 110 cm.
I may refer back to this.

First, let’s look at that air layer.

Looks like someone found a home.
Out to the yard for you.

Inspecting the growing medium… it was wet enough, but came out too easily to be promising.

After cleaning up, no sign of root growth, but lots of attempt to scab over? I don’t know if this is proto-roots, or something else.

Close ups:

The stringy bits are mostly left over moss.

I trimmed the results and put them in soil, but I don’t expect much.

This is my standard soil with some clay pebbles on top.
This is put perlite… it’s in a corner and should be sheltered enough from the wind. Also, I don’t care if it’s not.

Anyway, on with the main show. Out of the pot and lets have a look.

Clear sides
where the water goes.
Pretty clean.

30 minutes in…

60 minutes in…

140 minutes in…

180 minutes in, and it’s clear enough for a hose on the last bits.

Time to start on the root base.

That’s a fairly nice radial root base.

Which pot works?

This pot is too small.
This pot is too big.
This pot is just right.

Wiring in:

And there we go.

Hmm… should I defoliate and/or prune?

On the bench.

I’m quite pleased with the nebari.
I do note that from this angle it’s rather more off-center than I thought.

And the offcuts.
