Azalea Conles – 2019 to 2021

This is a tale in three parts.

Part 1: The Experiment

This was a first experiment into air layering, starting in May 2019.

Hypothesis: air pruning will result in good roots, and can be achieved with a colander

Details:

Step 1. Get a $3 colander from Big W, and a nicer pot for it to sit in to look pretty.

Just the colander alone would look terrible.

Step 2. Add an Azalea and soil.

Nursery stock

Step 3: Combine.

Nothing fancy.
Some potential in this one, I feel.

Actually this worked pretty well. Here it is April 2020, 11 months later.

These flowers lasted a surprisingly long time.

Part 2: The Bonsai

The Azelea was going well enough that I declared the experiment a success, and potted it.

Nothing too fancy.

Part 3: Death of a Bonsai

For whatever reason, this didn’t take. It was dead within a few months.

I think this happened by November. It wasn’t summer heat. Maybe I just cut off too much root?
