Giant Sequoia – August 2022 Seeds

Did you know the Ballarat Botanical Gardens has a few Giant Sequoia standing around? And trees standing around just drop seeds anywhere? And you can just take them? That seems like a think someone should stop.

Hey, that’s a tall tree.

What type of tree?

Oh, hey, thanks, I was wondering.
Don’t move… their vision is based on sight.

So I grabbed a few cones, took them home, and got some seeds.

Actually getting those seeds was pretty tricky. The cone was not ready to open.
The not-quite-ready thing throws the whole attempt into question.

But after diligent work, I ended up with a tray full of Giant Sequoia seeds.

I could have gotten more, but when it gets down to it, how many do I want?

Which leaves a question: to stratify or not to stratify. The answer: both.

This lot get the cold.
This lot get the natural spring experience.
(That’s straight cutting mix, nothing fancy.)

Next: waiting.
