Black Locust: September 2022 potting

This one has been a long time coming… 5 years since the trunk chop of an unwanted standard, and then watching the root stock grow. Now’s the time.

First, though, I’ve got a sequence of oncoming spring to record.

August 19.

Tiny spot buds.

September 10.

September 15th.

Still September 15, with a detail on the leaves.

September 26:

Alright, time for the planting.

Previews:

Really just showing I should have done this 4 weeks ago.

Let’s have a look at that trunk carving:

I’ll come back to this.

Alright, enough reminiscing. Out of the pot.

Not particularly root bound.

Start cleaning off the soil.

In the past I might have sawn through about half way down. But I don’t have a saw I’d use for that anymore.

One hour later:

That was quite heavy.

Let’s look the pot:

It fits.

Wiring and filling in progress:

A sign of improvement… I’m leaving a lip so water doesn’t easily overflow.

The result:

A little over-balanced to the left, but this grows well enough to recover.

And the display point:

Currently in the back row, but this is big enough, and I’m short on bench space, so this might end up on the ground.

Also, something I noticed, and record here for the future… there’s two largish branches near the top of the trunk, with one growing strongly up. Currently, they create a bit of a fork. But if I were to cut one out, and carve back the trunk, it could be interesting. It would also resolve some of that unbalancing.

This is clearer in person.
