Common Fig: August 2023 repot / December 2023 update

In August 2023 I decided to repot the four little figs. It had been a couple of years, and I was keen to try a perlite/pumice mix. (I think this was the first one that I did.)

Spring is just starting to show.
Von Neuman leaves.

Get the trees out on the slab.

They look… OK.
Nothing to write home about.
Into a new pot, with rather larger spacing.
Let’s see how they grow.

November 2023:

Three of them are growing well; the one on the right is insisting on another 4 weeks dormancy.

December 2023:

In full bloom.
And the other side.

This one convinced me that the perlite/pumice mix works.

I’ll make the general observation that I don’t really know what to do with these figs. They are small, while the leaves are large, so there’s not much chance to show the trunk. And I don’t think the circular pot is helping the design. I *think* I’d be better off with a rectangular pot and a clump-style planting. Alternatively, maybe they should be in separate pots.

For this year I’m going to prune them to be less straggly. The proliferation of buds will help that a lot. Kind of a training year.
