Norfolk Island Hibiscus: March 2022 planting

Or Lagunaria patersonii, if you prefer.

My seed binge continues. Walking home recently I noticed this fellow:

Suburban trees.

At first I tried to take seeds from the actual tree, but it turned out to be much easier just to pick them up from the ground below.

These are ready to go….
…but these ones have already gone.

‘Twas but the work of a minute to gather a handful:

The road to becoming a new tree is not a pretty one.

Then I had to work out how to get to the actual seeds. Answer: split the pod with a root rake and pluck them out.

They actually opened up fairly easily.
About 3 to 6 in a pod.

And there’s the seeds:

Warning: that fluff came out with the seeds, and it is *really* itchy.

Soaked overnight, and into the waiting soil.

Planted 14/3.

I’m told 14 to 28 days for germination so I should see something by mid-April. Although:

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.

Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.

So who knows how that’s going to work out.
