Making a Turntable

Having a turntable is useful. But all I could find was a Lazy Susan, which isn’t really fit for purpose. It had a smaller base than top, so things tended to wobble a bit. I never managed to find (or, to be honest, really look for) a proper gardening turntable. But making things is an option.

Parts list:

  • 40 cm circular board
  • 30 cm bearing plate
  • small screws and washers
  • Rubber stoppers
This is about $40 worth of bits.

Combining together, I have a turntable:

Some decisions on the way

  • The bearing plate is rated for 200 kg -ample.
  • I was thinking about having a second boards, as a foot. But I decided not to bother, and just attached the stoppers to prevent the turntable sliding. I think it will be ok, although maybe it’s leaving the bearing plate exposed. We’ll see.
  • I had some wood gloss left over from another project, so I gave the board a coat for protection.

It’s worked out so far, although it was made at the start of winter (April 2022) and I’ve barely used it since. Let’s see how it handles the spring workload.
