Weigela: January 2023 Maintenance

The Weigela is more of a shrub than a tree, and has a distressing tendency to look like it. Also, it’s summer, and the heat is curling those leaves. So time for some upkeep.

A couple of before shots, which shows:

  • leaves obscuring the trunk
  • dead flowers to be removed
  • leaves and moss showing stress from summer heat
  • traces of a friendly neighbourhood spider
I’ve been treating this as the front till now.
I think this view shows more movement.

Some closeups of the flower lifecycle:

Dead and dried a month into summer
The frame holding the flowers. I quite like how they look in the tree without flowers, and I’m curious how they will change without the flower.
The flowers sitting in the frame, which is apparently the perianth.

Sadly, I left some wiring on too long, and have some scarring.

There’s a surprising amount of texture in this bark, even before the scarring.

Offcuts:

Not the mostest, but there’s a few long branches in there.

The results:

I cut the long straight central stem down another notch, and brought the whole thing lower.
This is the old front view, but I like the view from the right more.
I think this is the new front, although there’s a branch coming straight out that gets in the way.

I spent some time taking photos of the flowers.

I think I’ll make this the new photo on the home page, despite the week moss.
The Pedical is connected to the Perianth. The Perianth is connected to the Floral Axis. And so on.
Toying with a summer colour shot.

Finally, it turns out that moss isn’t dead, just dried. After the morning water, it became at least clearly green.

I mean, it’s still been savaged by the moss vandal, but at least it’s not actual mulch.
