Western Australia Peppermint: January 2023 training

WA Peppermint is still in a pot in training. The big issue that I’m trying to address is branches that are not in proportion to the trunk. This is pretty fast growing, so it needs some attention.

Here’s a couple of before photos, showing most growth up high.

See the few thin branches along the sides… they need to be about twice as thick.
Lots of growth up high, as the tree tries to lift itself. Except I don’t want that.

My operating ideas are:

  1. the lower branches will thicken if they have more leaves
  2. removing the higher growth will slow down in that direction
  3. I should thicken branches before pruning and compacting them
The tree is balanced into a conical tower, although the trunk happens to be leaning.

I’m keeping some growth in the top, hoping that I can avoid having the tree end in a mass of scars from removing older bigger branches.
