Chinese Elm Cutting: March 2023 repotting

The Chinese Elm cutting has never been happy. After reading this post questioning scoria-heavy potting mixes (actually, outright rejecting them), I happened to pay attention to just how unhappy. I don’t have akadama, but I do have perlite and some clay balls. So I decided to do an emergency repotting.

The tree is alive, but with very small leaves in only a few places.
Nice leaves though. And apparently, spiders.

I mixed up some replacement soil:

  • perlite
  • clay balls
  • charcoal
  • pumice
Thinking now, the clay balls and the pumice are probably filling the same role. I wonder if I’d be better off with only the perlite and pumice.

Clearing out the tree:

This one spent years in a very small pot, so the roots are heavily curled. I wanted to get them a bit more radial, So I wired them out a bit.

Still lopsided though.

Back on the bench.

Good luck, little tree.
