Narrow Leaf Ash: April 2023 pre-potting

Last time I posted about these seeds was apparently in January. I’d put the seeds in a single pot and let them sprout, which proved to be very effective. They sprouted happily and grew into a little ticket.

But this was only going to last so long.

So long is here at last.

It’s time they got planted.

The trunks actually have some nice taper and shape. Pity it’s such a mess.

First step is to get the plants out of the pot.

And the plants slid right on out. Pretty dry under there.

Disentangling time.

I believe that was 39 seedlings. What am I going to do with 39 seedlings?

Into pots.

Sometimes never throwing things away helps.

I’ve been wanting to experiment a little with soils, so this seemed like a good time. Four different soil mixes.

Mix 1: my standard mix (clay balls, fine pumice, charcoal, scoria) + perlite

I’ve been wanting to up the water retention.

Mix 2; 4-Pumice, 4-perlite, 1-charcoal, 1 coir

I’ve been wanting to try pumice and perlite.

Mix 3: the sand, pumice, and potting mix the seeds were grown in.

Sometimes I don’t have reasons for the things I do.

Mix 4: The ground, which has done well for everything else planted here.

These ones might struggle to get water. I’ll try to remember.

Scope, fill, fertilize, outside.

Commence stage 2.
Also these. And the ones in the ground.
